Holiness in the House of God
This sermon continues the exposition of the Acts of the Apostles and focuses on Acts 5:1–11 — the sobering account of Ananias and Sapphira.
Why does God respond so severely?
What does this passage mean for the church today?
The main sin of Ananias and Sapphira was not partial giving.
It was dishonest image management.
They wanted the reputation of radical devotion like Barnabas, while secretly keeping part of the money. Their deception was not merely against people — it was a lie to the Holy Spirit.
At a foundational moment in the life of the early church, God dramatically defends His holiness and the purity of His people. God takes the holiness of His dwelling place seriously.
The sermon carefully distinguishes:
1. Positional holiness
Through Christ’s sacrifice, believers are declared righteous once and for all. Our standing before God is secure because of the cross.
2. Progressive holiness
A lifelong process of sanctification — growing in obedience, repentance, and Christlike character through the work of the Spirit.
Ananias and Sapphira desired the appearance of holiness without the obedience and transformation that progressive sanctification requires.
